Last time, Savannah nearly caught up to Miguel. Now, Miguel and Michael have made up their minds to kill her.

***********

Looking back on it now, it wasn’t just self preservation that motivated me to kill Amazon Coco. Revenge was on my mind, too.

We reached the town. Silence surrounded the skeletal remains of half-built apartments. We went into a tower to prepare.

In Mike’s words, this was where it would all go down. The plan was simple: I’d fire the flare gun, luring Coco and Heather. We’d stay on the third floor and wait for them to get to us. There were two doors they could get at us from. We’d let them come through the doors before dodging around them and escaping through those doors. Next, we’d barricade the doors and run down the stairs, which we had already covered in oil from an oil drum.

As we ran, we’d use our lighter and matches to set the stairs ablaze. The whole place would soon burn. Just like that, no more Coco.

Michael rolled the oildrum across the concrete floor, spilling the kerosene. “Mike… we need to be careful of the fumes.”

“This plan is pretty far from careful, if you ask me.”

I shrugged. He stood up. “Kid, kerosene was a good idea. Great suggestion.”

“Well, we can’t exactly set concrete on fire,” I pointed out. “Kerosene is the logical way to go.”

“Yeah,” he said. “Sure. So how do you feel?”

I gave another shrug. “I wish it wasn’t so humid…”

“I mean about this,” he said, putting a hand on my shoulder. “The plan. You okay with this?”

I looked him in the eye. “Of course I am,” I said, certain of nothing else in the world. “The bitch killed Levi. She threatened to kill you.”

“Alright,” he said. “We’re gonna see her face to face again. Don’t fall for her fucked-up mind games, kid.”

“I won’t.”

“Once this is done,” he said. “We’ll get far away from here. It doesn’t matter where we go.”

“We’ll put this whole thing behind us,” I said.

Mike was right. Once we set the plan into motion and the amazons arrived, there would be no time for fear. No time for mercy. And then both of us would ride off into the sunset. Steeling myself, I headed across the unfinished room to the broken window.

Remembering the storm of the night we escaped the store, the thunder drummed through my mind. The ghost of the lightning played across my thoughts. Whipping out my flare gun, I stuck it out and fired it into the air before withdrawing it in. It was time to meet the evil we’d crossed paths with multiple times. Why did it feel weird to think of her as evil?

This time, I didn’t bother to watch the flare travel. I strolled to one of the two doors and sat on a bench, surrounded by thin drywall and hanging plastic sheets. These plastic sheets were good places to hide. They were huge, so anything could hide behind them.

I looked over at Michael who stood in front of the other door over a dozen yards away. He flicked his lighter on and off.

My heart pounded at the thought of killing her. I had known her for less than a year, yet she felt like such a big part of my life. Some doubts about the plan creeped in as I waited. What if she didn’t come? What if she and Heather managed to outplay us? We only had one shot to do this right.

I checked the window closest to me every once in a while and Michael checked his. But as time passed, my legs went from trembling to fierce shaking. I pictured the amazons tearing their way through the woods and down the street toward us. We can beat them, I repeated to myself.

But I didn’t fancy our chances in a fight. Coco had a lot of fat on her, but she possessed agility. That combination of size and agility made her dangerous. Her fat could act as a cushion, making it hard to hurt her with punches. As for Heather, she was fast and powerful. Too much to take on. The best way for this plan to work was for us to outmaneuver them with as little physical contact as possible.

On one occasion, I made my way to the window. My heart rate slowed down because I expected not to see them. However, as I leaned out the window to move my line of vision to the ground… there she was.

At first, Coco didn’t see me. She stood there as gorgeous as always. It didn’t take long for her to look up and lock eyes with me. She had something large in her hand. A backpack… my backpack. She smiled and waved at me, then beckoned me to come down. My eyes were big, and I opened my mouth to shout down at her. But I only let out a shaky breath. The frantic footsteps of Michael came.

“What is it?” he asked, leaning in next to me. Then he looked down.

“Hey, shithead!” he yelled. “No Heather?”

“Heather’s not coming,” Coco shouted up at us. “We went our separate ways. So it’s just you and me, Miguel!”

“She’s lying,” Mike said, touching my shoulder. But I wasn’t so sure.

“Come down here,” Coco said. “Don’t you want your backpack? Come and I’ll give it to you.”

I couldn’t believe Coco had gone out of her way to retrieve my pack. I wasn’t sure whether to admire or hate her for it. “We gotta get in position,” Michael said. He ran back across the large room.

For a moment, I just stood there and looked down at her. What if we didn't have to kill her? Perhaps there was another way. What if we drove her away instead?

“I’m coming, cutie!” Coco declared, dropping the backpack and running headlong through the open entrance. Even her run looked sexy.

But my heart began to race again. It wouldn’t be long before she came. And this time, she’d want me dead. There was no turning back from the plan now. Trying to stifle my shivers, I sprinted away from the window and grabbed a match from my pocket. I hunkered down beside the bench in front of the door. It was nerve-wracking to listen for the footsteps. Mike held his position and didn’t look back at me. Instead, he was crouched and focused on the door in front of him.

Taking after his example, I looked at the door in front of me and prepared for Coco to come through it. I wondered if Heather was truly gone. If Coco had come alone that would make things easier. At least, I hoped it would. Michael had the lighter so if she came through my door I’d have to run to his door.

Hopefully I’d be able to make it there.

Imagining Coco running up the stairs, I waited for the sounds. The murmuring quiet hung. I waited. There came the heavy tread and crunching of debris. We waited. She stomped about on our floor, or close to it. A little shuddering sigh came from me. I couldn’t help but glance at Mike for a second time. He continued staring at his door, his lighter in one hand and a match in the other.

The footsteps stopped. All the noises ceased. Mike shifted in his crouch, his eyes still fixed forward.

To his right, the drywall parted as Coco crashed through it and careened at him with widespread arms. I nearly jumped out of my skin as Mike sprang up but it was too late. She scooped him into a powerful hug and slammed him into another wall with a bone-shaking thud. The unfinished walls trembled. He fell to the ground but rolled aside as she pounced. Mike jumped to his feet. I ran toward them, shouting.

“Mike! Run!”

Her dark hair waved about as she lunged, grabbing his arm and sending him off his feet again. Getting up, he backed against a set of silver bars. She advanced. I sprinted. Cornered, he threw a flurry of punches but she grabbed him and pressed him against the bars. She glared into his eyes as he struggled.

“You should’ve stayed out of my way,” she growled.

“Fuck you, Savannah!” he spat. Something flickered across his face then, something older than our time in The Game.

She froze, her face adorned with an almost worried look. “...What?”

“Hey!” I yelled, running at her to strike her. The beast of a woman let go of Michael and whirled on me.

A sharp squeal escaped me as both her arms closed around my chest. The pressure overwhelmed me. I got a face full of her blue shirt and felt the soft yet firm skin beneath. I kicked my feet in the air while she clutched me against her.

“You told him my name?” Her yell exploded in my ears and vibrated my bones as she squeezed the breath out of me. I couldn’t get any words out as I flailed and kicked. The immense pressure of her arms tightened. My hands pushed against her - torso or chest, I couldn’t tell - but the softness was unyielding. I struggled for air, tasting the fabric in desperate gasps. The concrete floor might as well have been a hundred feet below me. She hoisted me high and squeezed harder.

Then came her gagging sound. Her arms opened. I fell from her grasp and yelped upon hitting the cold floor. Her feet stamped about. Spots danced in my vision as I looked up to see Michael with his arm looped around her neck. He hung on, his feet dangling.

I tried calling out Mike’s name but the word died in my throat. She spun around and flung him away before going after him with a roaring fury. Her punch missed, hitting concrete with a hollow thud. She winced, shaking her hand before lunging again.

He dodged one swing, then the other. Every time she did score a hit my stomach lurched, especially when she spilled him across the floor. But Mike? He got up in a flash and jumped away, a blur of movement and ferocity. Backing up, he dodged her strikes. She charged. He danced aside. Then his eyes darted to something behind him. As I got up I followed his gaze, at first unable to make sense of it.

Then I saw the elevator shaft.

It remained barely hidden behind a hanging sheet of white plastic, fluttering like a curtain. Bit by bit, he brought her closer to it. She swung at him but he weaved around her attacks like a ninja. I made my way towards them, skirting around walls and peeling plastic curtains. The crunch of my shoes on broken concrete stifled my attempts to be quiet.

Mike led her closer to the shaft. His movements stayed sharp and precise while hers remained wild and powerful. But he couldn’t keep it up forever. The meat of her fist caught him in the shoulder, knocking him off balance. Coco tackled him down right beside the elevator shaft. The sound of her smashing him to the floor shook the exposed beams. My eyes widened and my mind stalled, stuck in panic. He was gonna die. We’d both die. And it would be because I was the same scared, weak plaything for Coco that I had always been.

“How’s that jiu-jitsu working out for you?” she asked with a little chuckle. She planted both hands on his shoulders.

Despite the breathtaking tackle he still stared into her eyes with defiance. Wind blew in from a window, parting the hanging sheet and revealing the deadly drop next to them. In my frozen mind I figured out what to do. Coco got to her feet but Michael could only roll to his side before she used her shoe to roll him onto his back. She didn’t even glance at the drop-off beside her.

I ran toward her, my desperate footsteps not catching her attention. The amazon raised her foot to stomp him. Then she turned to face me with shocked eyes. I didn’t stop. I kept going and slammed into her with a grunt. The Amazon toppled over the edge into the shaft. Her flailing arms, her kicking legs, her panic-stricken face... all of her stood out to me before the black void swallowed her whole. A thud, loud and final, struck my ears. Only silence echoed from the bare walls around us. I looked down but couldn’t see where she fell.

Michael grunted beneath me. “Kid,” he sputtered.

Turning back, I knelt beside him. “Are you okay?”

He got to his hands and knees, coughing. “She did a number on my ribs,” he grunted. I lifted his shirt and checked him. Sure enough, dark bruises pockmarked his torso and chest.

“Bad, huh?” he asked, probably seeing my shocked face.

I helped him get to his feet. “Can you walk?” I asked.

He nodded. Only now did I notice his bruised lip. But he turned away and his face darkened. Ambling over to the elevator shaft, he spat down it. After that final fuck-you, we both headed out the nearest door.

The danger was finally over. At least, this time. This island still had plenty of Amazons. Heather remained somewhere out there. Whether she was after us, I could not know.
But as we descended to the first floor of the stairwell, something sounded through the walls. It could’ve been a creaking door, wind whistling through an old pipe, a faint wheeze from Michael…

Or a yell.

I didn’t talk about it once I heard it, but the sound lingered in my mind as we strolled through the first floor lobby. We were almost to the door with the dark red letters EX above it when I stopped Mike.

“Did you hear that?” I asked.

“Hear what?”

“I thought I heard something,” I said. “Like a yell. Or a scream.”

In truth it wasn’t just a scream that I thought I heard. It sounded quite monstrous, muffled by numerous walls. And when I replayed the scream over in my head it sounded a bit like my name. The more I thought about it the more sure I became that two distinct syllables had been present in the scream. At least, if it was a scream at all.

“I doubt anyone else came in here,” Mike said.

“What if it’s her?” I asked.

He shook his head. “Not possible. Nobody’s surviving a fall like that.”

“You didn’t hear it?”

“No, kid. I’m sorry,” he said. “Maybe you just heard old building sounds. Let’s go before this stupid tower collapses on us.”

We went out the doors and walked around to the side of the tower. My backpack lay in the middle of scattered leaves, left there by Coco who was dead now. Mike looked at me as I stared down at it. I must've looked at the thing for an entire minute before picking it up. I found myself thinking of something Mike had said to me before we entered The Game. He had said we were brothers, not in blood but in mud. We had gone through the trenches together and emerged from the other side.

Both of us left the area long before sundown. We weren’t ever coming back here. As we moved through the forest, I couldn’t help but think about the scream. Maybe Mike was right. Perhaps I had simply heard things and it had been an old building sound. But I couldn’t shake the odd feeling I had from it. I also began to consider things I hadn’t when we came up with the last-ditch plan to kill the amazon.

That amazon’s children. Their names were Lola and Joey. And now their mother would never come home. And it was because of me. We'd done what needed to be done, yet thinking about it made me queasy.

We got to a building not far from the northeast coast of the island and settled there. As the days turned into weeks, we survived like we always did. But in between the supply runs and careful patrols, I thought about the scream in the tower. What if it had been from Coco?

Even if it had been her, maybe it was a dying scream. She had been pushed from the third floor. Even if she survived the initial fall, her injuries would surely have killed her, right? I had never thought myself capable of killing someone before this whole ordeal. But maybe everyone is capable of horrific acts under the right circumstances.

But maybe we hadn’t killed her. Was she still out there, somewhere on the island? I never brought up that possibility to Michael again, though I always kept vigilant. I kept watch most hours of the night. I swore off firing flares. We steered clear of people, amazons or otherwise, whenever we could. We didn’t need any other alliances. The less people we interacted with, the safer we’d be.

One day, four months after the battle in the tower, Mike and I found ourselves on the beach. We strolled alongside the water, our shoes crunching the sand.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” I asked.

“Gorgeous,” Michael said.

“One day soon,” I said. “We’ll win this thing. Then, we’ll be on the other side of the ocean.”

He nodded without a word. We slowed down and just stood there, staring out at the vast sea.

“The other side…” I echoed.

The gentle waves lapped the shoreline.
