romance with a hint of tragedy with plot twists?

I grew up loving Nicholas Sparks because my mom had a huge collection of his books, but it’s been about four years since I last read. Now that I finally have a break from grad school, I’m slowly getting back into reading.

I eased myself in with lighter books from Lynn Painter and Abby Jimenez, but now I’m hoping to transition into something a little more mature. I’m a bit out of the loop with what’s good nowadays, so I’d love some recommendations — especially books with great storytelling, emotional depth, or a little romance. Books with plot twists sounds great also.
