Let's start with the numbers. 5 T20Is. 5 ODIs. 2 Tests. October 22 to December 1. Biggest ever inbound bilateral series in New Zealand cricket history. And it comes at a genuinely fascinating time for both sides.

The context is everything here.

NZ beat India 2-1 in ODIs when they toured India earlier this year. India beat NZ in the T20 World Cup final in March. Both teams have something to prove against each other. Under Gill and Santner respectively, two young captains building new eras. Every game in this series feeds directly into 2027 World Cup planning.

And then there's the Rohit and Kohli angle. Both have retired from Tests and T20Is. This five-match ODI series is one of their last major opportunities to cement their spots in India's 2027 World Cup squad. At 39 and 37 respectively — playing five ODIs in New Zealand conditions in November — selectors will be watching every innings extremely closely. These aren't just bilateral ODIs. They're trials.

India haven't played a Test in New Zealand since 2019/20. Six years away from red-ball cricket in these conditions. The two-Test series at Wellington and Christchurch will be a proper examination of India's Test batting — swinging conditions, pace-friendly pitches, nothing like home.

NZ meanwhile are rebuilding aggressively under Santner. They whitewashed India in Tests at home in 2024. Won the ODI series in India earlier this year. On home soil in all formats they are genuinely dangerous.

The venues are iconic too. Eden Park Auckland. Basin Reserve Wellington. Hagley Oval Christchurch. Bay Oval Tauranga. Some of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the world.

October 22 can't come soon enough.

India are touring New Zealand in October-December 2026 for 12 matches across all formats. And this might be the most important bilateral series India play before the 2027 World Cup.
