The moment Chiz Escudero went silent, it was only a matter of time before he crossed the fence toward SB-12.

People kept looking for grand declarations, dramatic speeches, or public confrontations. But Senate politics rarely works that way. The real tell is usually silence.

When a senator stops defending the leadership, stops doing media rounds, and suddenly becomes difficult to read, it often means they’re already doing the math.

Chiz didn’t need to announce anything. His silence was the announcement.

The APC camp either didn’t see it or convinced themselves it meant loyalty. It didn’t. It meant options.

And now the funny part is watching another senator go quiet: Joel Villanueva.

Maybe it’s nothing. Maybe it’s just coincidence. Maybe he’s busy.

But after what just happened with Chiz, Senate watchers have learned an important lesson: when key players suddenly stop talking, it’s usually because the conversation is already happening somewhere else.

The APC coalition spent weeks believing that public messaging was political power. The old Senate hands understand that real power is counted in private, one conversation at a time.

Chiz went silent before the numbers moved.

Now Joel is silent.

And if I were still clinging to a fragile ‘majority,’ I’d be checking attendance sheets instead of Facebook comments.

In the Senate, Silence Is Usually a Headcount. Just Ask Chiz.
