What's your take on unfriending people on Facebook over politics?

PoliticsPH

I’ve been unfriending people on Facebook that I’m not really close with, mostly acquaintances or former workmates. It’s not because I think their opinions are wrong, but because we simply have different views and values when it comes to politics. As I get older, I’ve become more protective of my peace and more intentional about the kind of energy and perspectives I constantly expose myself to online.

But I also have close friends with different political views. I rarely engage in political conversations with them because some people are just unwilling to see beyond their own perspective, and continuing the discussion often creates more tension than understanding.

Minsan kapag napupuno na talaga ako, I ask questions to understand and challenge their arguments. And honestly, there are moments when they get caught off guard, and you realize how shallow or unsupported some of their reasons actually are. But I’ve also learned that not everyone is open to self-reflection or changing their perspective, no matter how logical the conversation becomes.

So I let it go. Not because I suddenly agree, and not because their views don’t matter, but because I value the friendship more than the need to win an argument. I’ve learned that maturity is knowing which conversations are worth engaging in and which relationships are worth preserving despite differences.

At the end of the day, protecting your peace doesn’t always mean cutting people off. Sometimes, it simply means choosing understanding, setting boundaries, and accepting that not everyone will see the world the same way you do.
