How do I know which frames I should go for?

I am a beginner player just going through the main story on Excalibur, he is fun but nothing crazy. I looked through the arsenal but I feel like just reading skill descriptions doesn't do the character justice enough to know if I would enjoy the playstyle. Should I just keep going through the story with Excal until I know more about the game or what?
