Germany Removes Airport Transit Visa Requirement for Indians
Germany has officially ended the airport transit visa requirement for Indian travellers from June 3, 2026.
Indian passengers can now transit through German airports without a separate transit visa if they stay within the international transit zone and continue to a non-Schengen destination.
The rule change mainly benefits travellers using airports like Frankfurt and Munich for connecting international flights.
A lot of people are confusing this with visa-free entry, but the update only applies to airport transit. Indians will still need a regular Schengen visa to enter Germany, leave the airport, or pass through immigration.
The German Embassy confirmed the change after it was published in Germany’s Federal Law Gazette.
Earlier, Indian passport holders usually required a Category A airport transit visa even for short layovers in Germany unless they held valid visas or residence permits from countries such as the US, Canada, Japan, or Schengen states.
This should make international layovers smoother and reduce extra paperwork for many Indian travellers flying through Europe.
