Semi Professional Theatre and Work Ethics (or lack of)

Discussion

Hi there! I currently working on some research and would love to hear about your experiences.

Whether as a tech, designer, actor, or teaching artist. If you’ve worked at a regional or a semi professional theatre, have you had any of the experiences listed below? Please share your thoughts if so!

  • Being asked to work on a “we’re good for it basis” and never signing any sort of written contract more so just being presented a job and knowing you’ll get paid somehow when it’s done.
  • Being paid late, more than once, or having checks bounce.
  • Being asked to work a job without being told the pay upfront unless you ask explicitly or just find out once you’re paid.
  • When contracting with a new company, not be walked through traditional hiring process steps like instructions on how to report workplace misconduct or a walk through of steps company takes towards employee safety.
  • ever been made to feel bad or like an inconvenience upon discussing matters of pay upfront or bringing to company attention workplace conditions/unfair labor practices
