Lenovo UK replacing my max-spec Legion 9i Gen 9 RTX 4090 with RTX 5080 options after failed repairs. Is this fair?

:snoo_thoughtful: Advice

Hey all,

I’m looking for advice from anyone who has dealt with Lenovo UK / EMEA Customer Care escalations.

I have a max-spec Legion 9i Gen 9 with RTX 4090, 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD. I’ve been dealing with serious overheating issues since August 2025.

The repair history has been a mess:

  • First onsite repair only fixed the overheating temporarily and the tech broke the audio jack.
  • Second tech had to come out to fix the audio jack.
  • Overheating came back.
  • Another onsite repair replaced the heatsink/cooling assembly, but made the overheating worse, and the USB port was damaged during that repair.
  • Lenovo then did a depot repair, but the laptop came back still overheating, arguably worse than before.

After a long escalation with emeacustcare@lenovo.com, Lenovo has finally agreed to replace it. The problem is the replacement options they’re offering are:

  1. Legion 9 Gen 10 with RTX 5080, otherwise similar specs I guess new intel CPU.

I asked for a 5090 configuration instead, because my original machine was Lenovo’s flagship Legion 9 with the top-tier GPU. I even offered to pay the internal cost difference to upgrade, but they said they cannot do that due to compliance policy.

I know an RTX 5080 Laptop GPU is technically around RTX 4090 Laptop territory in some benchmarks, but the proposed Legion 9 Gen 10 has a larger/higher-resolution display, so in native-resolution gaming it feels like I’d be accepting a downgrade. The Legion Pro 7 also feels like a product-line downgrade from Legion 9.

Has anyone successfully escalated this further with Lenovo UK/EMEA? Is there a better route than EMEA Customer Care? Would you accept the 5080 Legion 9 replacement, keep pushing for a 5090, or ask for a formal deadlock/final response?

Any advice appreciated.
