Drivers who've taken their car into Mexico recently - what did you do for insurance?
I'm getting ready for a road trip from Texas into Mexico and I'm confused about the insurance requirements.
I've heard everything from "your U.S. policy may provide coverage" to "you need a Mexican policy before you even cross the border".
For people who've driven into Mexico recently:
- Did you buy separate Mexican auto insurance?
- Were you ever asked to show proof of insurance?
- Did it come up at checkpoints or only in the event of an accident?
- Have any of you relied solely on your U.S. coverage?
I'd like to hear real-world experiences from recent travelers, since the information online seems pretty inconsistent.
