Persistent fine scaling on face/scalp: Skin barrier damage?

face/ears/eyes/nose/mouth/cheeks

Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.

Beard

I’ve had skin problems underneath my beard for a long time, but I’ll start from 2020. I had a very long beard six years ago, which seemed to trap skin cells. If I dug into the skin with my fingernail, I’d get a heap of clay-like debris on my nail. I know for a fact that I overdid it with oils, balms, etc. I’m not even sure I used beard shampoo and conditioner at the time, which made things worse. I also used to take long, hot showers. I probably ruined my skin barrier through all of this. However, that was a long time ago. I’ve since tried to avoid taking hot showers. When I have a beard, I sometimes use products like oils and balms, shampoos and conditioners, but sometimes not, since I’m never sure what’s right. There have been entire stretches of time where I don’t have any beard and try to keep things as natural as possible. But the problem remains: I seem to have accelerated turnover of skin cells and, maybe, a damaged skin barrier. The main issue, even with a beard that isn’t long—and sometimes without facial hair at all—is that I get a kind of ‘snowball spray’ of tiny white debris.

I’m not even sure that it’s seb derm because the flakes are minute, tiny dots. It’s never usually larger flakes beneath my beard. They’re also not particularly yellow or greasy. I only notice a slightly greasiness if I use products. I need to be clear: my skin isn’t extremely dry. There are no patches that look like an elephant’s foot. There is also no redness, no blotching.

Right now, if I simply just brush my fingers across my face, tiny little white dots will appear, and they’ll collect on my clothes. And that’s after two days of not washing, meaning there is more natural skin oil and less dryness. Recently, I stood for ages exfoliating with a beard brush and the result was pretty horrifying. It’s as if no amount of exfoliation gets rid of the build-up. And yet, I don’t seem to have genuine skin dryness. I can look into the skin beneath my facial hair and there are certainly little clusters of white dryness at times, but it’s never extreme.  I almost have normal skin, I feel.

Several months ago, I finally decided to start looking into this more and being more cognisant of how I approached my skin, documenting things. I made sure never to have hot showers, but that didn’t help. I experimented—as I always have, really—with using beard products. Whether I use them or not, nothing helps. I started fully shaving and using repairing moisturiser and cleanser, which I honestly never tried before. I can say that in my thirty-two years on this planet, I never once used anything like moisturiser. But it hasn’t worked. I also dislike using moisturiser when I have a beard as it feels weird to put it on and through the skin follicles, so I don’t do it often. I only put moisturiser on my face. Then, when I learned about yeast and how it can accelerate turnover and shedding, I tried Nizoral for 4 weeks. I know you’re supposed to use that on your scalp, but it can be used to treat your skin. I had high hopes for that.

BEARD AFTER USING TRIMMER

SIMPLY LIGHTLY BRUSHING MY FACE WITH MY FINGERS RESUSLTS IN THE ABOVE

THE RESULT OF USING A BEARD BRUSH FOR AGES. THIS ISN’T EVEN HALF OF IT.

NOT THE BEST PHOTO, BUT YOU CAN SEE LOTS OF LITTLE DOTS. THIS IS THE MAIN PROBLEM. TO ME, IT DOESN’T LOOK EXACTLY LIKE SEB DERM. THESE DOTS ARE ALWAYS THERE, NO MATTER WHAT. IF I TRY TO USE A BRUSH TO GET THEM AWAY, MORE APPEAR, SOMETIMES CREATING SMEARS OR CLUSTERS OF DRY-LOOKING SKIN

THIS IS RARER, BUT I SOMETIMES GET THIS AMOUNT OF BUILDUP IF I RUN MY FINGER NAIL ALONG MY SIDEBURNS AREA, FOR INSTANCE

Scalp and forehead

The same kind of problems appear on my scalp and forehead. After noticing dandruff-like symptoms, I once tried a medicinal shampoo for weeks. This was several years ago, and since I’ve had short to medium length hair for a while, I haven’t particularly noticed it being an issue. However, I recently decided to get a buzzcut, which I’ve had a few times in the past. As expected, when I use a trimmer, tiny dots and flakes appear. It feels disgusting, frankly. Right now, it doesn’t look like I have lots of debris, but I can tell a lot of light would reveal them. Just all across my scalp there will be tiny dots of skin debris. This is more noticeable on my forehead, eyebrow and the sideburns area.

My skin just feels like it’s weak, somehow. If I even just lightly press my forehead or eyebrow area skin particles/debris will appear. I can’t even say the debris is all of one type as it ranges from tiny whit dots (almost like dust) to flakes. It’s exhausting trying to figure out what I have.

It’s frustrating that I used the medicinal shampoo for weeks and it apparently didn’t do anything. Even if it was years ago, I’d expect it to have solved something. Now I’m considering using Nizoral on my head—again I only used this on my face—but I genuinely don’t know if I even have dandruff. It’s hard to tell.

It’s just so frustrating as if I wash to remove debris, what that does is just create more dryness, creating more debris…

This is a slightly difference concern, but even trying to use skin cleanser for the past few months on my forehead has actually just resulted in bumps and irritation. It feels like actively trying to help my skin just makes it worse.

SCALP AND FOREHEAD. NOTE: I USUALLY HAVE MORE DEBRIS ON FOREHEAD AND EYEBROW AREA, BUT NOT THERE AT THE MINUTE.

I have entire documents dedicated to researching this. I know I haven’t done it justice. I just don’t know what to do next. I once brought all of this information to my GP, who suggested I use spot cream simply because I had some spots at the time. Ridiculous. And I was hoping she’d tell me to use salicylic acid or something. I may have to try that next. There are so many options, so many terms.
