Physician Responded

Background:
22 y/o
5’7 ft - 62kg
Male
Throat

Symptoms:
Swollen tonsils
Pain when swallowing food and water
Mild pain and tenderness when I touch the upper side of my neck (below my jawline)
Mild Fever (yesterday)
Couldn’t speak properly (yesterday) - much more clear today

Previous Medical Issues:
April - 1st round of antibiotic - same symptoms - got presribed Cefuroxime 500mg 2 times a day for 7 days

May - 2nd course of antibiotic - same symptoms - got prescribed Co-amoxiclav 500mg 2 times a day for 7 days

COMPLETED BOTH COURSES

(I get swollen tonsils 1-2 times every year, tho’ not sure if it’s strep or just tonsillitis as the clinics here in our country doesn’t really test strep throat that much when getting diagnosed unless I go to a very expensive private clinic/hospital, unfortunately I’m still a student and I don’t have that kind of money)

Current Medical Issue:

Symptoms: (Started 3 days ago, became worse yesterday)
Yesterday: sever pain when swallowing even water - Mild fever
Today: Much more bearable - Low Fever

I have taken 4 mefenamic acid 500mg every 6 hours to manage the pain

Went to a doctor yesterday and he prescribed me to not take antibiotics as it would already be too harsh on my body and I might develop antibiotic resistance because I’ve completed 2 high doses of antibiotics for the past 2 months and instead, see an ENT for possible tonsillectomy.

Today I went to see an ENT and he said that my tonsils are swollen and has pus already. He just prescribed me azithromycin 500mg for 3 days 1 times a day. I asked about antibiotic resistance but he just said that I shouldn’t worry about it because the risk of rheumatic heart fever and spread of infection outweighs it. I also asked about tonsillectomy but he said that my case isn’t that severe since the past antibiotics that I took successfully treated my tonsils.

Now, I’m considering to get a 2nd opinion from another ENT as I’m not quite sure if the medication my doctor prescribed is right for me. Should I get a second opinion or should I just continue with the prescription as I was thinking that the reason why he prescribed that is because he wanted less harsh antibiotics for me.
