accidentally formatted my external drive with 3 years of photos. is it actually gone?

plugged in my WD passport, windows asked if i want to format it, clicked yes without thinking. 3 years of family photos. tried a couple free tools but they either found nothing or asked me to pay $80 upfront before showing me anything. has anyone actually recovered files from a formatted drive? what worked?
