The design issue of the display matrix ribbon cable in the Asus Zenbook S16

Support

Last summer, I bought a new Asus Zenbook S16 UX5606S. About five months later, I started noticing artifacts on the screen while working — they would appear and disappear. At first, I thought it was caused by another Windows 11 update. I also began to notice that these artifacts occurred more often when the laptop was connected to Wi-Fi 6. All of that turned out to be a coincidence.

At one point, while I was traveling and working in a café, the screen lit up with a bright white light filled with interference and then went dark. This happened right in the middle of work, while the laptop was stationary. On my way to the hotel, I bought an HDMI cable because I suspected the issue was only with the screen. And that turned out to be the case — after connecting to the TV in my hotel room, everything worked fine.

After returning from the trip, I bought a new laptop because the repair outlook was uncertain. ASUS’s international warranty has been suspended in my country this year, leaving only out-of-warranty service available. In an email, ASUS service told me they were only willing to replace the entire screen assembly with the lid, at a cost of about $700. I decided to postpone the repair for further investigation. I suspected the issue was only with the display ribbon cable because at one point, when I slightly opened the laptop lid, I noticed the screen flash.

I reached out to a seller in China through an online marketplace, who managed to find a compatible display ribbon cable for me — such cables are not available at service centers. Within two weeks, I received it and went to a small local repair shop, where they successfully replaced the cable, and now everything works as before.

The whole repair cost me $110.

Now, regarding ASUS’s design flaw that leads to the cable being damaged. Pay attention to the bend in the cable marked by the red arrow — it gradually forms, and I believe this is where the damage occurs.

In the photo, the cable on the left is for the camera, and the one on the right is for the display. When I got the laptop back after repair, the display cable on the right looked just like the camera cable on the left. But now, three weeks later, it has started to deform again — exactly as it did before.
