Why is finding the best VPN for PC harder than finding one for mobile?

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this, but VPNs feel way more inconsistent on PC than they do on mobile.

On my phone, most VPN apps are basically simple: open app, tap connect, maybe pick a location, done. Even if the speed isn’t amazing, it usually feels good enough for quick browsing.

But on my Windows PC, the same type of apps become a lot more annoying. Some slow down Chrome immediately, some mess with downloads, some randomly disconnect after the PC wakes from sleep, and a few just feel like they were designed for mobile first and desktop second.

I started looking for the best VPN for PC mainly for browsing, public wifi, and occasionally checking region-specific sites. I’m not doing anything crazy like torrenting all day or trying to run a full home network through it.

Cloudflare Warp is probably the least annoying for basic protection, but it doesn’t really work like a normal VPN since there’s no real country selection.

Windscribe feels more like a proper desktop VPN, but the free data limit makes it hard to use as a daily option.

Proton is the one I trust more, but on the free plan I’ve had some painfully slow sessions on PC, especially at night.

Someone also mentioned X-VPN in another thread, and I noticed they’ve been talking about a new no-logs audit and ISAE 3000 assurance by Deloitte. That made me more willing to test it instead of dismissing it as another random free VPN. I tried it on my laptop for a bit. It wasn’t perfect, but for normal browsing it felt less restrictive than some of the “free trial pretending to be free” apps I downloaded before.

At this point I care less about fancy features and more about basic PC stability: doesn’t kill browser speed, doesn’t disconnect randomly, doesn’t force sign-up before I can even test it.

For people using VPNs mainly on Windows, what actually feels reliable long term? Free is ideal, but I’m open to paid if the PC app is clearly better.
