Help with messages

A guy that I work with recently had to switch over to Google messages and doesn’t like whenever he receives a text message it pops up on his phone. He would prefer it just make a noise and show him a notification that there is an unread text message. He doesn’t like it whenever the entire text pops up on his phone. Is there a way to turn that specific notification off?
