I feel a contributing factor to loneliness is ultimately our environment

Discussion

Long-time lurker here. As I rapidly approach my senior year of college, I can't help but reflect on my experience. During my time here, I've made zero new friends beyond classmates who usually ghost me once the semester ends, and believe me, I've tried.

I put myself out there regularly. I'd describe myself as social, chatty, and generally fearless when it comes to talking to new people. They always tell me I’m sooo funny yet no one wants to hop on Roblox smh or even text back once the grades are in . I can never seem to get past that initial wall. This is especially true when trying to make new girl friends. Don’t even get me started on the guys, if you’re not kissing Johnny you might as well be the plague

For context, I go to a commuter school that's notorious for being difficult socially. Most people already have established friend groups, and many don't seem interested in branching out. Most often it can even feel like you're treated like a fan just for trying to connect.

I think most of us recognize that our environment plays a huge role in our development and relationships. What sucks is that sometimes we're stuck in environments we can't easily leave, and we have to endure them for years. Personally, once I graduate, I'm gone. I genuinely dislike the environment here. But it makes me think about everyone else who's trapped in places that make connection and belonging feel like a damn near warzone. My heart goes out to y’all and I hope you know you have a friend in me :)
