Is Time both Beginningless and Endless?
For the sake of this post, let's formulate *originalism* as the thesis that time had a beginning, i.e., time began to exist, and *finalism* as the thesis that time will have an ending, i.e., time will end or cease to exist.
**Argument Against Originalism:**
*1)* If time began to exist, then it did not always exist
*2)* If something did not always exist, there was a time before it existed
*3)* Therefore, if time began to exist, there was a time before time existed *(1, 2)*
*4)* There was no time before time existed
*5)* Therefore, time is beginningless *(3, 4)*
Likewise:
**Argument Against Finalism:**
*1)* If time will cease to exist, then it won't always exist
*2)* If something won't always exist, there will be time after it stops existing
*3)* Therefore, if time will cease to exist, there will be time after time stops existing *(1, 2)*
*4)* There won't be time after time stops existing
*5)* Therefore, time is endless *(3, 4)*
