I vibe coded a free, open-source macOS app that puts your Amazfit Helio Strap's live heart rate in the menu bar (no cloud, 100% local)
I wanted my Helio Strap's heart rate glanceable on my Mac without opening the Zepp app, so I built HelioBar — a tiny native menu bar app. It reads HR straight off the strap over Bluetooth. No account, no cloud, nothing leaves your machine.
What it does:
- Live HR right in the menu bar — the actual number, color-coded by zone (green/orange/red) with a trend arrow (♥ 84 ↑)
- Dropdown with a live sparkline, session min / avg / max, a time-in-zone bar, and % of your max HR
- Personalized zones — set your age, zones scale to your estimated max
- Elevated-HR alerts — macOS notification if your HR stays above a threshold for a few minutes (nice desk-stress nudge)
- Breathing biofeedback — guided inhale/exhale timer inline in the dropdown, so you can literally watch your HR settle
- Launches at login, no Dock icon, sandboxed
The one setup step: in the Zepp app, go to Device → Helio Strap → Heart Rate Push → enable Heart Rate Push. That makes the strap broadcast HR over standard BLE, which is what HelioBar reads.
A couple of honest notes:
- No HRV — the strap's BLE broadcast only sends the averaged BPM, not the beat-to-beat (RR) intervals you'd need for HRV. Wish it did, but the data just isn't there over the broadcast.
- No stress/energy/readiness — those live in the Zepp cloud, which I deliberately avoided to keep it fully local. (I explored a cloud version; it's in the git history if anyone wants it.)
