Best free VPN for iPhone that isn’t just a fake trial?

I’ve been trying to find the best free VPN for iPhone lately, mostly for normal browsing, public wifi, and occasionally checking region-restricted stuff when I’m traveling.
The annoying thing is that a lot of “free” VPN apps on iOS are basically just trials. You download the app, open it, and immediately get pushed into a paid plan before you can even test anything properly.
So far, these are the ones I’ve tried:
Proton VPN feels like the safest recommendation. I like that it has unlimited data on the free plan, but on iPhone the free server options can feel limited, and sometimes the speed drops pretty hard.
Windscribe is decent too. The app is simple and the location options are better than some others, but the data cap makes it feel more like a backup VPN than something I’d keep on all day.
Cloudflare Warp is probably the easiest one to use. It’s basically just on/off, which is nice, but it doesn’t really work if you need to choose a specific country.
TunnelBear looks nice and is beginner-friendly, but the free data limit runs out way too fast for regular use.
X-VPN was one I didn’t see mentioned as much, but I tried it after seeing someone say its free mobile app doesn’t push you into a trial right away. I also saw that its no-logs policy had been independently audited by Deloitte, which made me feel a bit better about trying it compared with some random free VPN apps.
I’m not expecting a free VPN to be perfect, but I’m mainly looking for something that doesn’t instantly force a subscription and still works decently on iOS.
Any iPhone users here have a free VPN they actually still keep installed?
