Does anyone else feel like the reason why monster existence being kept a secret is a little too weak?

I finished the show for the first time a 2 days ago and I feel like the reason the show gives us about why monsters are kept a secret is a little weak. They just tell us that the public would freak out if they ever found out. Now don't get me wrong I think that the public would freak out as we've seen numerous regular people in shock when Sam and Dean told them the truth but it's always just on that scale. We never had an arc where the boys had to internally conflict themselves whether it's right or wrong to keep the public in the dark and having them decide if mass panic would cause more harm or keeping it a secret.
