A FULL ARDUINO NANO GPU. (DX.10, OPENGL 1.3, VULKAN 1.2)
I forced an Arduino Nano to act as a Windows GPU with active Task Manager telemetry (Supports Vulkan 1.2 / DX10 / OpenGL 1.3)
Hey everyone I wanted to share a project that pushes the Arduino Nano way past its limits. I built a custom Windows display system that lets me route my desktops graphics directly through an Arduino Nano as an external rendering node.
I call it ARDUGPU.
Of just drawing simple shapes or images onto a screen this project hooks directly into the Windows graphics system using a custom driver. Because it talks to Windows like a display device Windows handles the graphics naturally giving the setup full compatibility with:
Vulkan 1.2
DirectX 10
OpenGL 1.3 (supports up to minecraft 1.13 wowie)
How it works under the hood:
The Telemetry Hack: Normally Windows only shows graphics information for devices that are connected directly to the computer. To get around this the Python startup script creates a program called ARDUGPU.exe when it starts. This program runs in the background. Shows up in the Task Manager so I can see how much resources it is using.
Silent Background Execution: When I start the script it gives me a menu to choose from. Once I choose it closes the menu. Moves all the work to a hidden background process that runs silently.
The Microcontroller Pipeline: A small image is 9,600 bytes. The Arduino Nano is programmed with firmware that makes it talk to the computer really fast. The background driver sends the image data to the Arduino Nano, which processes it and sends it back, to the computer.
Its techincally integrated graphics since it uses system ram but.. YEAH. anyway thats it..
