AITAH for not abiding to the ‘coming out deadline’ my boyfriend imposed on me?

Under 18 (ages 13 to 17)

Me (17M) and my boyfriend (17M) have been dating for a year. He’s came out to his parents, but I’m still closeted to mine. They’re not openly homophobic, but I’m still nervous to tell them. I can tell he’s a bit annoyed whenever we have to hide our affection around my family.

Five months ago, he said that he thinks I should have a ‘coming out deadline’, where I’ll have to force myself to come out to my parents so that I can’t prolong it anymore. He said that the more I wait, the more anxious I get about telling them, which I understand.

I agreed, and he said that it’d be five months later exactly. I said yes, but didn’t think it was that serious.

The ‘deadline’ was yesterday, and he texted me at about midday, asking if I’d done it yet. I replied that I hadn’t, and that I’d kind of forgotten about the whole deadline.

He called me and began asking if I was even planning on coming out that day, and I said that I still wasn’t ready. He got a bit mad and told me that I shouldn’t make promises I don’t plan on keeping, and I kinda agree, but don’t really think it was presented as an important thing for him.

He finished the call by saying that I need to tell my parents for our relationship to progress, and that there’s no point if I’m not willing to do something uncomfortable for him, then he hung up.

Today, he asked if I could come to his house later so that we could talk about it seriously, and I agreed. I’m going in about an hour.

Reddit, am I the asshole?
