What makes a good insurance broker?
Do not blindly trust any broker just because they have a website or app. Check the following:
- IRDAI registration Verify that the broker is registered with IRDAI. IRDAI has a list of registered brokers on its website.
- Multiple insurer tie-ups A broker should be able to show plans from multiple insurers, not push only one company.
- Clear explanation of exclusions If they only talk about benefits and premium, be careful. A good broker explains what is not covered.
- Claims support Ask what happens when you have a claim. Will they help with documentation, hospital coordination, reimbursement follow-up, and escalation?
- No mis-selling Avoid anyone who says things like “everything is covered,” “claim is guaranteed,” or “pre-existing disease does not matter.” These are red flags.
- Policy wording, not just brochure Always ask for the official policy wording. The brochure is marketing. The policy wording decides the claim.
