Life insurance

Corporate Life

I’m hoping someone can tell me what I’m doing wrong here.

I’m 44, a non smoker, generally in good health, and I’m looking at around £800,000 of life insurance cover. I’ve had indicative quotes from Aviva, Legal & General and Vitality.

What I wasn’t expecting is that all three seem to want to send a nurse to my house for blood pressure checks, blood tests and urine samples before providing final terms. They may also want reports from my GP.

What confuses me is that if I want to compare providers properly, am I really expected to have three separate nurse visits and potentially generate three separate requests to my GP for essentially the same information?

Is this just normal once you get to this level of cover, or am I approaching this the wrong way? I’ve always had life insurance cover as pay of my job but currently between jobs so feeling exposed.

Should I be using a broker who can narrow things down first and only submit a full application to one insurer? Or is £800,000 simply high enough that medical underwriting becomes unavoidable?

I’d be interested to hear how others have navigated this, because it feels inefficient for applicants, insurers and GPs alike.
