Need help with gray tick and double gray tick

I need someone to tell me the difference between one gray tick and two gray ticks.

I was obviously on my phone and my friend messaged me and was trying to get me. They then responded with : “i know you’re awake” . Can they tell based off of this alone?

One gray tick means the phone is off while two means the phone is on?
