A few months ago, I decided to turn a small unused corner of my yard into a garden. I didn’t really know what I was doing—just had the idea and started with whatever I could find.

At the beginning, it was honestly messy. I didn’t prepare the soil properly, planted things too close together, and watered inconsistently. A lot of seeds didn’t even sprout, and I assumed I had failed early on.

But I kept going.

I cleared the area again, added better soil, and started paying attention to what actually needed sun vs shade. I also stopped trying to grow everything at once and focused on a few simple things.

What surprised me was what actually worked:

1. A few leafy greens grew way faster than I expected

2. Herbs were the easiest to maintain (almost impossible to mess up)

3. Some random seeds I almost gave up on ended up being the strongest plants

Not everything survived, and I still make mistakes, but seeing something grow from a patch of empty ground I ignored for years is a different kind of satisfaction.

It’s not a perfect garden, but it’s mine—and I learned more by doing it wrong first than reading anything about it.

Still figuring things out, but I understand now why people get hooked on gardening.
