Lots of Raccoons Around - Looking Into Electric Fencing and Other Advice

Coops etc.

Right now our chicks are still in the garage in a brooder box while we put the finishing touches on the coop/run over the next week or two (at which point I think they'll be ready to move out into their permanent residence). I am very concerned about raccoon attacks once we get them outside, because we have a lot of raccoon activity in our area. A few were coming around our deck in broad daylight, and some friends helped us trap and dispose of those. We have trapped three so far, but our security camera is still showing at least one coming across our deck in the middle of the night, every night.

So, first question: is it worth continuing to trap and dispose of them, considering that the local population is so dense that we'll probably never truly get rid of them? Or do we need to just accept that they are around, watch for attempted break-ins, and then put the traps out if/when we notice break-in attempts or other unusual activity?

My next question is about electric fencing, which is really my big question. I have seen a lot of people here mention that an electric wire around the outside of the run is the only way to be sure to deter racoon break-ins. We've never worked with anything like that before, so that's a whole new set of equipment for us to learn about. Does anyone have any recommendations for what to look for? Suggested brands? Mistakes to avoid?

Finally, any advice for general racoon deterrent/management/protection would be fantastic. Would a motion-activated light do any good? I have seen some info about those online, but I'm skeptical about effectiveness. I've seen a number of racoon repellent sprays online, but they are chemical-heavy and I'm not sure if they are safe for use around our chickens? Outside of getting a dedicated guard-dog, is there anything else we can do? I feel like I must sound paranoid, but I'm just so scared of losing our girls to these bastards, especially as we are now seeing how dense the racoon population really is.

To add some further details, our run is fully enclosed in 1/4" hardware cloth, with the hardware cloth dug in to the ground to at least 6" depth. We also have a hardware cloth/chicken wire skirt surrounding the run out to 3'. In a few sections where we can't bury the run fence down to 6" (due to nearby tree roots getting in the way), we're being extra careful to also cover the skirt with heavy rocks and planks, and may put some pavers into the ground there at some point. Our run door, nestbox hatch, clean-out door, and coop door will be closed with hasps and carabiners every night around dusk. Our chickens will be in the run at all times aside from occasional trips out into the yard, but those excursions will only be in broad daylight and only under supervision. We keep bricks on top of our garbage and recycling bins so that there's no easy food source for the local scavengers. The only thing that we still have around that might be attracting them (other than the chickens...) is seed from our bird feeder, since the titmice just love scattering that stuff around.

Thanks in advance!
