AITA for refusing to attend my best friend's wedding after what she asked me to do?
I (24F) have been friends with "Sara" (25F) since high school. We've been through everything together, so when she got engaged last year, I was genuinely excited for her. A few months ago, she asked me to be one of her bridesmaids. I happily agreed and started helping with planning, dress shopping, and other wedding-related things. I spent a lot of time and money because I wanted to support her. About six weeks before the wedding, Sara called me and said she wanted me to step down as a bridesmaid. I was shocked and asked why. She explained that her fiancé felt I was "too attractive" and that some of his family members had commented that I would draw attention away from the bride in photos. At first I honestly thought she was joking. She wasn't. She said she still wanted me at the wedding, just not standing with the bridal party. I asked if she agreed with what her fiancé was saying. She admitted she didn't fully agree but didn't want to "create tension" before the wedding. I felt humiliated. It wasn't like I had done anything inappropriate. I hadn't complained about dresses, caused drama, or made the wedding about me. I was being removed because of how I look. After thinking about it for a few days, I told her I would not be attending the wedding at all. Now several mutual friends are split. Some say I was right to stand up for myself. Others say weddings are stressful and I should have ignored the comment and attended to support my friend. Sara says I'm punishing her for a decision she felt pressured into making.
