Customer got angry because we would not price match jeans from online seller
I work at a clothing store around my town, early this week a customer came in need of a pair of jeans. He showed me a screenshot of listings on his phone from online wholesale sellers where similar jeans as we had were going for $25. He wanted us to match that price since our jeans were $55. He argued that he had also checked prices on eBay, Alibaba and Amazon before coming to our store. I tried my best to explain that we cannot price match wholesale sites or overseas marketplaces.
The customer got angry and said we were ripping people off and left. I have dealt with unreasonable requests before, but this one really bothered me.
• What is the most unreasonable price match request you have received from a customer?
• Do customers often try to compare your store prices with wholesale or overseas sellers?
• How do you explain to customers that bulk pricing from manufacturers is different from retail pricing?
• Have you ever had a customer demand a refund for clothes they bought elsewhere because your store sold the same brand?
I am wondering if there are others who have dealt with customers who do not understand the difference between wholesale and retail pricing.
