Self-hosted Audio Streaming in the Apple Ecosystem
This is Casto. It is a self-hosted audio streaming app that is built for the Apple ecosystem that requires zero technical expertise to setup and stream your music library anywhere you have internet access — all you need is your collection of digital music files.
I built this a while back as a hobby project that I used for my own music streaming purposes, but recently put in the work to make a full fledged product. Currently the MacOS app is in a stable 1.0 state, and the web app is working great as my streaming client when I am away from my main computer (like when I go into my office). I also have an iOS app in development that is working great as my daily drive streaming app in the car, and on the go, but it still needs a little more work before its ready for prime time.
I would love for anyone who wants to take it for a spin to do so. It is FREE to use, and I would love any feedback folks have. It is not perfect, as it is a work in progress, but it has been working great for me for quite a while and I am looking to share it for other Apple folks to use and enjoy as well.
For those who like to see a list of features, here you go:
- Simple setup: point Casto to your local music folder and start streaming quickly.
- Plays major formats including MP3, M4A, AAC, FLAC, WAV, and AIFF.
- Automatic library organization by artist and album using online metadata.
- Dedicated Mac listening experience in the Casto desktop app.
- Mini player for quick playback control while you keep working.
- Dedicated web app access from any modern browser.
- Manual metadata editing at artist, album, and track levels.
- Easy sharing via web access while your library remains on your server.
- Apple ecosystem focus, with iOS app support in development.
Check it out at https://casto.app, and please feel free to share your feedback. I want to make it the best it can be.
