Interested in your thoughts on why I have adopted 'non-trans' instead of 'cis'
I would like to preface this by saying that I am a trans person, and consider myself a member of our community, so I feel I have an interest in discourse remaining constructive. I do recognise that giving ground on bigotry is to invite further loss, and that in a better world the following wouldn't be necessary. That said, I believe reaching that better world is going to require meeting everyone with kindness, curiosity and empathy. So here goes, and please hear me out:
I'd posit that preferring particular pronouns is valid, and that it’s wholly reasonable to ask someone else to use them with referring to you. As a community, I imagine most of us agree that 'trans' and 'cis' aren't slurs, and that etymology reveals neither are new inventions. If a non-trans person doesn’t like being referred to as ‘cis’, some parallels can be drawn between their aversion to that, and a trans person's aversion to being referred to by the wrong pronouns. When drawing that parallel, I am not speaking to which cuts deepest.
Regardless of why someone may dislike the adjective 'cis', or how misguided I feel that sentiment is, it remains clear to me that some people dislike 'cis' being applied to them. To adopt the stereotypical mindset of such a person for a moment, in their view I am male, and thus inherently a man. However, I disagree with that assessment, and do not wish to be referred to by he/him pronouns, which is sort of asking them to put their views aside when referring to me. Similarly, a person who doesn't like being referred to as 'cis', is asking me to put my views aside and not refer to them using that adjective.
To me at least, it’s kind of functionally equivalent and not wholly unreasonable to respect their wishes, and instead refer to them as ‘non-trans’ instead of ‘cis’. A transphobic worldview is irrational to me, though when interacting with the less ardent among their ranks, compromising in this way whilst being mindful of any resulting overreach, might help discourse remain constructive. If nothing else, it could help to reduce the frequency at which trans people are misgendered, and I imagine we all know how much that can hurt.
I know this is a very difficult time for our community, and that understandably tempers might be running high right now, though I would be interested in your thoughts, especially as they relate to engaging with less ardent transphobia.
