Hi all, I've fairly recently gotten into collecting and wearing watches besides my apple watch. It's been about a year and a half. My collection is pretty small right now and I don't feel the need to grow it super quickly (and, it gives my wife something to buy me for birthdays/christmases as I'm tricky to shop for, which is nice). Right now, I've got a Seiko solar diver SNE585, an Orient Bambino, a Seiko SRPH29, a Citizen solar field watch and my trusty Timex Weekender that I've had ever since it's been a part of the MFA uniform.

For my next birthday, I'm probably going to ask my wife to buy me either an Alpinist or a Baby Aplinist. I love the look of the Alpinist and I quite like the Baby Alpinist too but I've read that it can be top heavy and every watch already looks top heavy on my tiny little svelte wrists.

Anyways this gets me to my question. I want to buy myself a bit of a birthday present. I really like the look of the Longines Spirit because I think the dial is beautiful, but most importantly it has clear arabic numerals without a ton of other "business" on the dial. The SRPH I own is one of the first watches I bought, but I very rarely wear it because the dial is so busy and the minutes are more prominent than the hours so it's actually just sort of hard for me to read the time on it. That said, while I think a Longines will at some point be my first "luxury" watch, I've got enough other expenses right now that I don't want to drop more than $500 or so on this purchase.

I thought about going the Chinese watch route and getting the Pagani Design Spirit homage/clone, but to be perfectly honest I DO care what other people think and am around at least a couple of people that wear nicer watches and dread the conversation of "oh, is that a Spirit?" - "no, it's a Chinese knockoff." I know I'm not supposed to care what others thing, but them's the brakes.

So, I'm looking for suggestions of watches that might scratch the itch for me. Quartz is OK as is automatic or solar. Ideally 38mm or less. And finally, not a variation of the Khaki/Murph because the dials there are too busy for my taste.

Thanks!
