When I first got into Hermès, I thought the only decisions that mattered were color and size. Gold or Etoupe? 25 or 28? Sellier or Retourne? Then I started paying attention to the leather, and that changed everything. Two bags can look almost identical in photos, but feel completely different in real life. Some leathers are structured and polished. Some are soft and relaxed. Some look better after years of wear. Some look perfect… until the first scratch. Here’s the simplest way I’d describe the most common options:

Togo – the safest all-rounder. Good structure, durable, and develops a beautiful natural shape over time.

Clemence (TC) – softer and heavier, with a relaxed, slouchy look that many people love.

Epsom – lightweight and rigid, ideal if you like crisp edges and a more formal appearance.

Swift – silky smooth and incredibly rich in color, but more delicate.

Evercolor – refined and balanced, softer than Epsom but still holds up well.

Mysore – fine-grained goatskin with a slightly dressier feel.

Box – glossy, classic, and elegant, but every scratch tells a story.

Barenia / Barenia Faubourg – develops a patina and tends to look better the more you use it.

The funny part? The leather that looks “perfect” online isn’t always the one you enjoy carrying most. I thought I wanted something pristine and structured. But the bags I reach for most are the ones that feel lived-in and effortless. If you’ve owned more than one leather, which one surprised you the most?
