Difficult phase
II’m feeling really overwhelmed in my sales role and could use some advice from people who’ve been through something similar.
I’m based in India and joined a fintech company a little over two months ago. We sell payment gateways and payment infrastructure solutions.
The challenge is that my role isn’t just hunting new business. Once I onboard a merchant, I also end up acting as the account manager for them. Payments is such a sensitive industry that something is always urgent. A payment failure, integration issue, settlement concern, bank dependency, product escalation, compliance query, success rate drop, something always needs attention.
As a result, I spend a lot of time firefighting for existing accounts while also being expected to build pipeline and close new business.
What is making things harder is that the pipeline I had built for this quarter has largely dried up. I had two deals that looked promising and could have closed, but both eventually fell through. Now I’m staring at a pretty empty pipeline and feeling demotivated.
I’m starting to question myself.
Is my sales approach wrong?
Am I spending too much time servicing accounts and not enough time prospecting?
Am I just going through a rough patch that every salesperson experiences?
Or am I genuinely not cut out for sales?
The pressure is getting to me because I genuinely need this job. I support my family, have a student loan to pay, and don’t really have the luxury of things not working out.
For those who have been in B2B sales, especially fintech, payments, SaaS, or enterprise sales:
Did you go through a phase like this early in your career?
How did you balance account management and hunting?
What would you focus on if you were in my position right now?
How do you stop deal losses from affecting your confidence?
Any advice would be appreciated. Right now I feel stuck and I’m trying to figure out whether this is a temporary setback or a sign that I need to rethink my approach.
