Quit my job?
Hi! I’m 22 and got diagnosed this year. I sleep like shit every day and my rheumatologist hasnt been available for weeks, nor are the other programs I’ve signed up for, so I would really appreciate some advice. I’m American.
I’ve been completely house bound for about 8 months, only leaving for required class attendance (I’ve graduated uni as of this spring, didn’t walk). All of my energy went to basic taking care of myself and schoolwork. Can barely bathe, cook/feed myself, or do anything, yet I also can’t sleep until 4am every night, even when I get ready for bed at 9pm. Always kept awake by fibromyalgia pain. Got some sleeping medication which will hopefully help.
My question is: if I have the privilege of choosing between working a job or not for the time being, should I quit my part time job. I am worried about working making the symptoms worse, but I don’t have access to a medical doctors opinion right now. I worked the job in previous years and had no issues, but I wasn’t sick then. I worry about excruciating pain from the sitting standing and physical requirements, and there’s no online option. I feel very guilty for quitting on my long time boss last minute.
I also worry about saving up for future living expenses, because it’s incredibly unlikely I could win a disability check case and would receive <1k a month (minus 200+ for lawyer fees, so $700 a month if I miraculously won) which is not enough to support myself in this economy. But I still live at home so I could temporarily leave work and be supported by my parent I suppose. The CFS program I want to join is $150 a week, so I would only be able to afford that with current savings for about a couple months, and that’s just one expense.
Another concern with not working is I’d have no social interaction. I haven’t interacted with society for months and the isolation is really overwhelming the more time passes, but I also know I could be more isolated if I work and then get more disabled.
If anyone has advice as to whether it would be a medically beneficial choice to quit my job, or just general advice, please let me know. I feel so hopeless and scared of the loss of autonomy that comes with me having these chronic illnesses, and it feels like an unclimbable uphill battle.
