Approaching 40 and Feeling Like All Hope Is Lost

I'm fast approaching 40, and sadly it feels like all hope is lost for me to ever find a career path in life.

I look at so many people on YouTube in their 30s and 40s who seem to be in the same place as me, and it makes me wonder if this is just how life ends up for so many of us.

I'm unemployed, still living with my parents, sleeping in the same bedroom where I grew up. It feels as though life has never really changed. The same chores, the same routines, the same stories and family tales I've heard hundreds of times before. Every day feels less like living and more like simply existing.

I have a degree that has turned out to be useless and no real job prospects. I'm constantly told that I'm too old for many opportunities that might lead to a decent income. People love to say, "Now is the perfect time to start a new career" or "Go back to college." Maybe that works for some people, but at my age the reality feels very different. The odds seem incredibly slim. For every success story, there are countless people who try and never make it anywhere. Success feels like the exception, not the rule.

To make matters worse, my health doesn't seem right either. For a while now I've been dealing with extreme and constant muscle and joint pain, headaches and fatigue. I try to walk and exercise because that's what everyone recommends, but often I end up feeling even worse the next day.

Lately I've stopped looking for work altogether. The process just stresses me out. Sending CV after CV into the void, never hearing anything back, never even getting a rejection. Just silence.

The truth is, I'm never happy. I hate my life.

Sometimes I think back to my childhood and realize how miserable much of it felt. In my family, school and education were everything. I remember interesting family trips abroad and a vacations being cancelled because I had a silly spelling test, an English speech, a piano recital, or some poetry performance at school.

Looking back, I can't help but ask: what was it all for?

Did my life turn out better because I stayed behind to study, practice, and perform? Did sacrificing those experiences actually lead to a better future? The answer is NO!

Instead, I find myself nearing 40, unemployed, stuck in the same room where I grew up, wondering where all those promises about hard work, education, and success disappeared to.

Yes, I agree that here and there I could have made different decisions in life. There are certainly moments I look back on and think, "Maybe I should have chosen another path." Things might have turned out differently. But if I'm being honest with myself, probably only slightly differently. Maybe a little better, maybe not. It's hard for me to believe that a small handful of different choices would have completely transformed my life. Sometimes people act as though every outcome is the result of one wrong turn, but life is rarely that simple. A lot of factors are outside our control, and sometimes despite doing what we're told is the right thing, we still end up disappointed by where we land.
