West Virginia State Folk Festival Question
Hello r/WestVirginia, I am interested in attending the Folk Festival in Granville in a couple weeks and I am wondering what y’all thought about the safety of this event.
https://www.wvstatefolkfestival.org/
It seems incredible with lots of cultural events that fascinate me such as storytelling tents, quilts, authentic bluegrass and appalachian folk music, and square dancing but I understand that some information on the website uses some concerning language.
One example of this is in Job’s Temple (the methodist church that’s Sunday service will mark the end of the festival), the description mentions this church becoming popular in the first place because of its “southern sympathies” over the Pisgah Methodist Episcopal church. Another thing is just the lack of any non-white people in any pictures of previous festivals.
It is my understanding that it is a possibility the festival runners are confederate adjacent (from some reenactment pictures of confederate uniforms on the site), although I cannot tell specifically the extremity of any possible beliefs.
I am interested in this event from a cultural anthropological perspective, people watching, and learning about appalachian folk culture, but I want to seriously consider the possibility that I will encounter friction due to being an outsider. I will be attempting to blend in with the dress code I will follow, but It will likely be clear at the very least that I am an outsider.
Does anyone have any knowledge about Granville and the surrounding area? Any idea about how welcoming this festival is? Anyone attended before?
As someone who has lived in the south my whole life, I am comfortable and used to some stares and comfortable with disagreeing with some ideals that may be present at the fest, but also not wanting to go where I am unwelcome.
