Staying Local to SoCal Realistic?
30-year-old dad in Los Angeles looking for some honest advice from people already in the trade.
I’m currently finishing lineman school at the end of June and plan on getting my CDL right after. I’m completely new to the utility/linework world and trying to understand what the realistic path looks like.
My long-term goal is to work for a utility company and build a stable career, ideally somewhere local in Southern California. I have two daughters, a home, and family responsibilities, so being gone for long periods or constantly traveling would be difficult.
What I’m trying to figure out is:
Is it realistic for a new guy with no linework experience to stay local in the Los Angeles area and eventually become a lineman?
How many people actually get into local utility jobs versus traveling construction work?
If staying local is the goal, what jobs should I be applying for first (groundman, helper, utility worker, etc.)?
Is getting my CDL enough to start opening doors, or should I focus on other certifications too?
If you were starting over in Southern California with a family, what would your game plan be?
I’m not afraid of hard work, long hours, or starting at the bottom. I’m just trying to understand what the realistic path looks like for someone who wants to build a career while still being present for their kids.
Any advice is appreciated.
