What’s one road trip mistake you only make once?

I'm talking bout the kind of mistake that seems small at the time, but after one bad experience you never ignore it again. Could be anything —skipping a rest stop, driving too late at night, packing something in the wrong place, ignoring the weather, taking the detour too late in the day.
