Question about Mary Morstan

I'm currently reading Sherlock Holmes following publication order. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is where I'm at right now. I just started The Five Orange Pips and it says at the beginning that Mary went to see her mother, but as I remember from the Sign of Four her mother was dead. I'm reading a Peguin Classics edition, could anyone enlighten me about this, please?
