Why does the US have civil war reenactments?

I saw online that there is a civil war reenactment in Missouri this weekend for the battle of “Carthage”. Do Americans really go and watch a group of people pretend to kill each other? What’s the point? The “actors” seem very serious and dedicated to the performance.
