Can't complete map conditions (bug?)

If I die in a map with a condition like "Complete all Abysses" on the boss, it respawns me in a map with just the boss and nothing else and the map cannot be completed. Surely this is not intended, right? Right? What is the point of revives on waystones if you waste the map and have to use another for the same atlas node after one death?
