Two of the Most Uncomfortable Things Jesus Ever Said and Did

Most people have a favorite version of Jesus.

The gentle Jesus. The patient Jesus. The Jesus who never says anything that makes you uncomfortable.

Then you actually read the Gospels.

And you find moments that don't fit that picture at all.

One of them starts with a grieving man.

"Lord, let me first go and bury my father." — Matthew 8:21

It's one of the most reasonable requests anyone ever made to Jesus.

The man isn't rejecting Him.

He isn't arguing with Him.

He isn't walking away.

He simply wants to bury his father, grieve with his family, and then come back.

In the Jewish world, burying your father wasn't just an act of love—it was one of the highest family obligations imaginable.

Nobody questioned it.

Nobody argued against it.

Yet Jesus responds:

"Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead." — Matthew 8:22

No comfort.

No delay.

Just a command.

Follow Me.

At first glance it sounds harsh.

But Jesus wasn't attacking grief.

He was exposing delay.

Because the request wasn't simply about a funeral.

It was about "later."

Three words that still trap people today:

"Let me first..."

Let me first finish school.

Let me first get financially stable.

Let me first get through this season.

Let me first fix myself.

Then I'll fully commit.

Then I'll obey.

Then I'll follow.

The problem is that what keeps us from God rarely looks like rebellion.

It usually looks reasonable.

That's why it's so dangerous.

Jesus put His finger directly on the things we think are justified because those are often the things we place before Him.

As He later said:

"No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God." — Luke 9:62

And then the Gospels give us another uncomfortable story.

This time it's not a man delaying Jesus.

It's an entire town dismissing Him.

Jesus returns to Nazareth—His hometown.

The people know His family.

They watched Him grow up.

They know His occupation.

And when He teaches, instead of faith, they respond with offense.

"Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary?" — Mark 6:3

In other words:

"We know who You are."

Or at least they thought they did.

Then comes one of the most shocking verses in Scripture:

"He could do no mighty work there..." — Mark 6:5

Think about that.

The blind were healed.

Storms obeyed Him.

Demons fled from Him.

Yet in Nazareth, miracles were scarce.

Why?

Mark tells us:

"He marveled because of their unbelief." — Mark 6:6

The same Jesus who made crowds marvel at His power was astonished by the depth of their unbelief.

And here's the connection between both stories.

The grieving man said:

"Let me first."

Nazareth said:

"We already know."

Different words.

Same problem.

One delayed obedience.

The other replaced faith with familiarity.

One put Jesus off until a more convenient time.

The other stopped expecting anything from Him because they thought they had Him figured out.

Both missed what was standing right in front of them.

And that's what makes these passages so relevant.

Most people don't walk away from God through open rebellion.

They walk away through delay.

Through familiarity.

Through assumptions.

Through saying:

"Not yet."

Or:

"I already know that."

The people of Nazareth didn't reject a stranger.

The grieving man didn't openly reject Jesus.

Yet both stories contain the same warning:

The greatest obstacles to following Christ often don't look sinful at all.

They look reasonable.

They look familiar.

And that's exactly why they're so easy to miss.

Which warning do you think is more dangerous today: "Let me first..." or "I already know"?
