I've probably sent more Upwork proposals than I'd like to admit.

I'm Top Rated in my niche, I've made thousands of dollars through the platform, and one thing that took me way too long to realize is that connects are just a business expense.

I see a lot of people treating connects like they're buying lottery tickets. They'll spend hours debating whether a job is "worth" 12 connects.

Meanwhile, clients are posting projects worth hundreds or thousands of dollars.

At some point I stopped thinking "How do I save connects?" and started thinking "How do I get a return on connects?"

That mindset shift changed everything.

After years of sending proposals, I noticed that the ones that got responses weren't necessarily the longest or most impressive. They usually did a few simple things well:

  • Showed I actually understood the project
  • Got to the point quickly
  • Gave the client a reason to trust me
  • Made it easy to continue the conversation

What's interesting is that the pattern became so obvious that I started documenting it.

Recently I've been experimenting with whether AI can reproduce that proposal structure consistently. Not the generic AI fluff everyone complains about, but the actual framework behind proposals that win replies.

So now I'm curious:

For people here who consistently land projects, what do your successful proposals have in common?

Have you noticed any patterns, or is it still mostly instinct at this point?
