Difficulty Defeating the Eater of Worlds (Master Mode)

Does the Eater of Worlds become stronger when fought on the Surface?

It keeps spitting Vile Spit constantly, which deals a lot of damage and is hard to dodge. I've already tried using Grenades and still couldn't defeat it (with a crit-focused setup) — not even close, actually.
