I didn’t realize I had a torn ACL for two years and now my knee feels completely normal
I’m 17F and I’ve done Brazilian jiujitsu for three years—four years this September. I initially injured my knee by trying out a kickboxing class my BJJ gym offered.
I was supposed to hop in a circle while the coach was holding my right leg. I didn’t hop when I was supposed to and my left leg twisted; there was an audible pop and a burst of pain. Ever since then my knee has been unstable.
I thought maybe I could recover from it if it were an acl sprain or even partial tear, so I let it rest for six months and then returned to BJJ because my knee felt normal. I never saw a doctor.
However, over the next year, my knee began to get worse; it was “slipping” often and swollen. Also, sometimes if I shifted in bed, it would get locked. That’s when I decided I probably needed to see a doctor.
Got an MRI done and was told it was a torn meniscus. I got the surgery done (first surgery) and it only took one stitch. I was on crutches for two months, prescribed to physical therapy for five months (which I did), and allowed to return to BJJ after physical therapy was done.
My knee was still slipping, though (although not nearly as badly), and I went back to my doctor for a follow-up. My original surgeon had left the practice for an undisclosed reason, and the surgeon I went to for my follow-up prescribed another MRI.
Apparently my ACL is completely torn and I’ll need the whole surgery. I feel like I just recovered from the last one. My knee feels completely normal besides the occasional slip. No swelling, pain, or locking. I don’t know how the torn ACL happened (maybe with the initial injury?).
Has something like this ever happened to anyone? Tips for recovery are welcome
