Why does it take a fraction of a second to debit my credit card, but 3-5 business days to return funds?

As text says. I bought a pair of pants for $72.09. Swiped my credit card and $72.09 is charged as fast as I tap. I go to return the pants, the same charge takes 3-5 business days to return. Why is this?
