I went back and looked at the *original comic book debuts* of five iconic Batman villains: **Joker, Catwoman, Two-Face, the Riddler, and Mr. Freeze,** and it’s wild how different some of their first versions were compared to how they’re portrayed now.

A few things that stood out:

* **Joker** debuts in *Batman #1 (1940)* and comes off way more like a calculated killer than the “clownish” version people often think of first. There’s also a great early-story twist involving a disguise.
* **Catwoman** also first shows up in *Batman #1,* and she isn’t immediately presented like a full-on costumed supervillain; she starts with a **disguise** while going after jewelry.
* **Two-Face** (then **Harvey Kent**) is a straightforward “respected Gotham DA” until the acid attack; then you see the birth of the **coin-flip** decision-making that defines him.
* **Riddler** (*Detective Comics #140, 1948*) isn’t “chaos for chaos’ sake” at first—he’s driven by ego and the need to prove he’s smarter than everyone (especially Batman).
* **Mr. Freeze** originally appears as **“Mr. Zero,”** and the freezing accident + survival suit concept is there early, even before the modern name/iconography fully forms.

**Discussion question:** Which villain has the *best* first appearance, and which one do you think evolved the most into their “definitive” version?
