Cost of healthcare in the USA is going to make me broke
Mom got diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis recently and was prescribed Ofev. From what I understand, it does not cure the disease, but it can slow it down. So it’s not really something we can just ignore or “wait on.”
The problem is the cost. Without good insurance, Ofev in the U.S. is financially insane. The monthly cost would basically destroy us.
I make around $72k/year before taxes. After rent, car payment, food, utilities, helping my mom, and normal bills, I have maybe $900–$1,200/month left on a good month. I have about $18k in credit card limits available, not because I want to use them, but because I’m starting to feel like I may have no choice.
I found a medical travel service in Mexico that says they can help coordinate everything legally with the prescription: doctor/paperwork, medication pickup, a good hotel and a personal driver.
The total cost would still be expensive, but around 60–70% less. The idea would be to go once every three months to get the prescription fullfilled.
I know this sounds extreme, but the U.S. price is more extreme.
Has anyone here dealt with a parent having a serious illness without enough insurance coverage?
How did you pay for it without going bankrupt?
Would it be financially stupid to max out credit cards to keep my mom on treatment if the Mexico option makes the total cost much lower?
I’m not asking for medical advice or where to buy anything. I’m just trying to understand the financial side before I make a desperate decision.
